About Historical Archives of the Yowani Choctaws

Our Mission

The Historical Archives of the Yowani Choctaws are committed to the systematic preservation, conservation, and stewardship of the historical record of the Yowani Choctaw people. The Archives’ mission is to identify, collect, protect, and maintain primary-source documents, material culture, and archival artifacts that bear witness to the political, social, and cultural continuity of the Yowani Choctaw community, ensuring their availability for scholarly research and for the benefit of future generations.

Preserving Our Heritage Through Physical and Digital Archives

Continuing to extend the documentary record into the late territorial and early national period, the Yowani Choctaw appear in an 1828 report by Mexican commissioner Manuel de Mier y Terán. In this source, the Yowani are rendered as “Iguanés,” reflecting a Spanish-language variant of the Yowani name.
